It’s FUN, and rewarding!! You will help make a difference in a girl’s life! You’ll learn new skills, experience new things and go to new places. You will be part of a nationwide and local network of volunteers who all share a belief in the Girl Scout mission. You will grow as a person. It’s a chance to be a mentor to girls and lead them to success.
- How can I make a difference in someone’s life?
-
Women and men have partnered with Girl Scouts to help girls everywhere realize their full potential. Our volunteers are inspirational and invaluable, and they have a profound effect on girls they mentor. Quite simply, there would be no Girl Scouting without them.
- I would love to help but don’t seem to have the time.
-
Most of our Girl Scout volunteers work, they raise their families and they are active in the community. The Girl Scout program is flexible and has many opportunities to volunteer, both short and long term opportunities. We will help you determine where you can make a difference no matter what your schedule!
- How can I use my skills to help?
-
From being the “head cheerleader” who encourages and supports girls in Girl Scouting to accompanying the girls on a field trip to a local museum to helping raise the funds and traveling with a group to a Girl Scout World Center in Mexico, you can use your skills and explore your interests. Here are a few of the many ways you can support your Girl Scout: Suggest a fun day trip
Set up a phone tree
Coordinate transportation for an outing
Be a guest speaker
Teach girls a new skill
Design a troop photo album or Web site
Join girls on a field trip
Learn first aid at a Girl Scout-council sponsored training session so that you can support
girls on their outings.
Become an advocate in your community for Girl Scouting
Tell a girl you’re proud of her
- Do I have to do this by myself?
-
Being a Girl Scout volunteer is never lonely! It takes many adults doing many different things to make the Girl Scout program successful. Adults who work with girls are always paired with other adult volunteers. You will meet interesting new people and become part of the Girl Scout family.

- How can I help if I’m not very creative?
-
Girl Scout programs and activities are so varied, we are sure your talents and skills will be an asset to us.
- What if I was never in Girl Scouts?
-
You don’t have to be an expert on Girl Scouting to be a volunteer. The council will mentor and coach you in your volunteer role, offer you learning opportunities and provide resources and support in a variety of ways.
- I don't want to be a leader can I still volunteer?
-
Yes, although we always need volunteers who can be troop leaders, there are many other volunteer opportunities with a variety of time commitments. See the sample listing below:
GO Rock! Community Programs-GS-West is leading the nation in offering unique community programs for girls – and we need volunteers for these individual programs:- Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center (COJC) – This is a medium secure treatment center for
Juvenile delinquents and Youthful Offenders. - Fort Reno Adolescent Center (FRAC) – This is a minimum secure substance abuse treatment center for Juvenile Delinquents.
- Oklahoma County Juvenile Bureau (OCJB) – We are working with County Level Juvenile
Probation Services to deliver Survival Skills to Young Women. - Emerson Alternative High School – We work in both areas this school is divided into. We meet with pregnant teens and teen mothers once a week in the Outreach Program and teach a daily leadership class for the teen girls in the Metro Program.
- Metro Tech Alternative High School – We plan to deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to students through a mentorship program.
- Oklahoma Housing Authority – We currently work in 5 government housing communities where we provide girls with activities in the early evenings on a weekly basis.
- YMCA After School Program – We work with the YMCA in 8 different locations to provide girls with activities on a weekly or biweekly schedule.
- Oklahoma City Rescue Mission – We meet with girls whose families are staying in the shelter and provide the girls with activities on a biweekly schedule
GO Rock! The School - We offer a planned curriculum at more than 30 area public schools (mostly OKC metro area) during the school day. Volunteers work with staff to present this curriculum on leadership and self-esteem – in some cases just two hours a month is all that is required.
Outdoor education- Summer camps and outdoor education is a big part of Girl Scouts today. Every spring and summer, GS-West hosts resident and day camps at various locations throughout our 39 county service area. Volunteers are often needed for these camping programs. We also offer a HAT (High Adventure Team) activity where girls do more adventure skills such as scuba diving, rock climbing, canoeing and other activities.
Cookies - Perhaps one of the best known Girl Scouts activities is the annual cookie sale. Each year, we need volunteers to help us deliver cookies, organize cookie booth sales, or even work in the administrative area. There are lots of ways to volunteer during this extremely busy time of year. We also sell candy, nuts and magazines in the fall and need volunteers for this program as well.
Administrative- Organizing all these events for more than 12,000 girls is a daunting task. If your skills include administrative responsibilities, we can always use more volunteers in our Council offices.
By sharing 3 to 4 hours each month the energy you provide to Girl Scouts will instill confidence in girls that will last a lifetime. We’re looking for volunteers who represent the diversity of the world we live in - men, women, senior citizens, younger adults, people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds and, of course, our treasured alumnae - anyone who wants to help make a difference in the lives of girls. Join our more than 944,000 adult volunteers and find out how Girl Scouts can help you:
• Build community
• Enhance your skills
• Learn something new
• Make contacts
• Rediscover your own potential
• Inspire girls everywhere - Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center (COJC) – This is a medium secure treatment center for
- Why do you need my social security number when I fill out my Volunteer Application?
-
This is a national requirement and it enables us to run background checks on volunteers.
- What type of training can I get before working with girls?
-
Leaders who work with troops should start by attending orientation, “Leadership Essentials.” In addition, leaders are encouraged to take first-aid training. Ongoing training is offered through community service teams, leader meetings and topic-specific workshops. Each troop must have at least one trained leader.
- Do volunteers need first-aid training?
-
Each troop needs a person trained in first aid for camping and certain other activities, as noted in Girl Scouts “Safety-Wise” publication. Girl Scouts recommends that an adult certified in first aid be with your troop. Every troop should also have a first-aid kit as well.
- What can I do to help the leader?
-
Talk with your girl’s leader and see what type of help is needed. Extra adults are always needed for trips and special events as well as for Girl Scout Cookie activities.
- Are volunteers required to wear a uniform?
-
No. However, at the Council Shop there is a wide variety of Girl Scout logo wear available.
- What is E-Business?
-
Personify is an off-the-shelf Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system hosted, maintained, and supported by TMA Resources, Inc. that has been configured by GSUSA and councils for Girl Scout use.
TMA, the vendor, set up a virtual portal for Girl Scouts. In this virtual portal, the templates and functionality are shared but the data is specific to each council. The primary advantage of using a virtual portal is enhancements, bug fixes, and other code changes need only to be deployed once, allowing for faster, more frequent and less costly patches. Registered members who create a profile in eBusiness can purchase programs, trainings, memberships and make donations online. Troop leaders (01 positions only) can manage their troop records online.
- Who can use Personify eBusiness?
