Ways to Volunteer

If you can think it, you can share it!
In-School:GS-West offers volunteers a new way to serve girls through our In-School program. We offer a planned curriculum at more than 50 area public schools (mostly OKC metro area) during the school day. Volunteers work with staff to present this curriculum on leadership and self-esteem – in some cases just two hours a month is all that is required.
Troops: The most traditional method to deliver the Girl Scouting experience to girls is through a troop. Through the troop experience, girls grow together in Girl Scouts. Troop leaders and assistant leaders provide the leadership to help girls grow – by organizing trips, cookie sales, community service projects and a host of other troop opportunities.
Community Programs: GS-West is leading the nation in offering unique community programs for girls – and we need volunteers for these individual programs.
COJC (Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center) in Tecumseh is a program where volunteers bring Girl Scouting to girls who are incarcerated at this facility – providing leadership to these girls who need to learn how to direct their lives onto a more positive path that leads to school, jobs, etc.
Public Housing sites are locations where we bring Girl Scouting to families where they live. In many cases, families do not have the funds or even transportation to take girls to meetings or activities, so we bring the activities to the girls – including programs on healthy eating, exercise, creative arts and more.
Outdoor Education: Summer camps and outdoor education is a big part of Girl Scouts today. Every spring and summer, GS-West hosts resident and day camps at various locations throughout our 39-county service area. Volunteers are often needed for these camping programs. We also offer a HAT (High Adventure Team) activity where girls do more adventure skills such as scuba diving, rock climbing, canoeing and other activities.
STEM:
(Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is a new program aimed at
getting girls interested in the sciences. Girls learn to build robots
using LEGOs – and GS-West is developing a robot-building team that will
compete in state, regional and national contests.
Cookies:
Perhaps one of the best known Girl Scouts activities is the annual
cookie sale. Each year, we need volunteers to help us deliver cookies,
organize cookie booth sales, or even work in the administrative area.
There are lots of ways to volunteer during this extremely busy time of
year. We also sell candy, nuts and magazines in the fall and need
volunteers for this program as well.
Administrative:
Organizing all these events for more than 12,000 girls is a daunting
task. If your skills include administrative responsibilities, we can
always use more volunteers in our Council offices.
