Specific Ways to Volunteer
New Volunteer Online Orientation
New volunteers/mentors are required to complete the following courses while you are waiting for your application to be approved and prior to meeting with your group.
Girl Scouting 101 gives new Girl Scout volunteers an
overview of the organization and the basics on working with girls of all ages.
Hosted by Sophia (from the GSLE Overview, aka “Ask Sophia”), the vibrant,
interactive orientation combines and streamlines the information currently
contained in the online volunteer orientation, Leadership Essentials online,
and the GSLE Overview/Ask Sophia.
What does Girl Scouting 101 cover?
Girl Scouting 101 is broken down into eight parts:
- About Girl Scouts (the basics)
- Ways to Participate (The flixible options - troop, camp, series, event, virtual and travel
pathways, plus direct and indirect volunteering,)
- What Girl Scouts Do (GSLE, journeys, Girl's Guides, Bronze/Silver/Gold Awards)
- Misson, Promise, and Law
- Girl Scout Cookies
- Staying Safe (the Girl Scout's Safety Standards)
- Ages and Stages: What Girl Scouts Are Like (girl development for each grade level)
- What's Next (what will happen to the answers they submit via learning log; how to move

Different Areas To Volunteer
Through the troop experience, girls grow
together in Girl Scouts. Troop leaders and assistant leaders provide
the leadership to help girls grow – by organizing trips, cookie sales,
community service projects and a host of other troop opportunities.
Events and Programs are planned year round throughout the council area.
They can be local, regional, or council-wide events. Some of the events
are planned by the council while others are planned by troops, service
units or districts. Whether it is planning an event or just volunteering at one events are a great way for volunteers who want to only volunteer once in a while.
Summer
camps and outdoor education is a big part of Girl
Scouts today. Every spring and summer, GS-West hosts resident and day camps at various
locations throughout our 39-county service area. Volunteers are often
needed for these programs.
The Series pathway gives girls the opportunity to do something that
interests them for a short period of time. Girls participate in a series
of programs with the same group of girls relating to a specific theme
or purpose. Volunteers are always needed to help the High Adventure team and teach girls about Science just to name a few.
The travel pathway is a girls chance to explore new places and cultures, sample
food and languages, and be the person they aspire to be. Girls can Discover their inner strength, values and new skills as they look at the world from a different point of view. Travel can be across the world or across the state. Volunteers are always needed to plan trips, go on trips or even offer advice on locations.
GO Rock! The School
GS-West
offers volunteers a new way to serve girls through our program during school hours. We offer a planned curriculum at area public
schools during the school day. Volunteers work
with staff to present this curriculum on leadership and self-esteem – in
some cases just two hours a month is all that is required.
GO Rock! The Community Programs
GS-West is leading the nation in offering unique community programs for girls – and we need volunteers for these individual programs.

- Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center (COJC) – This is a medium secure treatment center for JuvenileDelinquents and Youthful Offenders.
- Fort Reno Adolescent Center (FRAC) – This is a minimum secure substance abuse treatment center for Juvenile Delinquents.
- Oklahoma County Juvenile Bureau (OCJB) – We are working with County Level Juvenile Probation Services to deliver Survival Skills to Young Women.
- Emerson Alternative High School – We work in both areas this school is divided into. We meet with pregnant teens and teen mothers once a week in the Outreach Program and teach a daily leadership class for the teen girls in the Metro Program.
- Metro Tech Alternative High School – We plan to deliver the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to students through a mentorship program.
- Oklahoma Housing Authority – We currently work in 5 government housing communities where we provide girls with activities in the early evenings on a weekly basis.
- YMCA After School Program – We work with the YMCA in 8 different locations to provide girls with activities on a weekly or bi-weekly schedule.
- Oklahoma City Rescue Mission – We meet with girls whose families are staying in the shelter and provide the girls with activities on a bi-weekly schedule.
Perhaps one of the best known Girl Scouts activities is the annual cookie sale. Each year, we need volunteers to help us deliver cookies, organize cookie booth sales, or even work in the administrative area. There are lots of ways to volunteer during this extremely busy time of year. We also sell candy, nuts and magazines in the fall and need volunteers for this program as well.
Administrative
Organizing all these events for more than 12,000 girls is a daunting
task. If your skills include administrative responsibilities, we can
always use more volunteers in our Council offices.
